Career Development Project
The Career Development Project includes three specific areas: 1) didactic courses in clinical research for trainees, junior faculty, and other interested research personnel. 2) mentoring program to facilitate and enhance the mentor-mentee relationship, identification of potential mentors, development of guidelines for mentoring in clinical research; and 3) small group forums for trainees, junior faculty to discuss progress in actual research projects.

- Examples: IRB workshop, Lane library tools/effective medical searching, NIH and other external funding opportunities, guide to promotion at Stanford, statistical resources, intra-institutional granting opportunities, negotiating clinical trials budgets, etc.
- Group of 2-3 mentors + 1 statistician per group
- Monthly meetings
- Separate groups for fellows and junior faculty
- 2-3 brief informal presentations monthly
- Focus: specific aspect of hypothesis development and research design
- Presentations as a springboard for discussions of more broadly applicable aspects of research
- Feedback from group on project - work in progress
- Initial mentor assigned in offer letter
- Relationship should serve as first step in networking and career/research guidance
- Opportunity to help mentee find project-specific mentor
- Help in initial project development
- Final mentor identified over time; will assist in further career development and research funding
- Contact name for CHRP Career Development Program available to Division Chiefs
- Career development opportunities outlined to all new recruits on Instructor, Medical Center , and University Track Lines
- Division chiefs should decide other needs? within clinical lines
- Once new faculty identified to the Career Development Program, they will be encouraged to attend career development program
- Pre and post evaluations of junior faculty members and fellows
- Evaluations of all three tiers/mentors a regular intervals
- Solicit suggestions yearly to improve program
